Miami will face Maryland to open the 2011 season and also will be the first game of the ACC schedule. The Hurricanes and Terps will each be sporting first year coaches, Al Golden and Randy Edsall, respectively. Earlier today, the NCAA handed out suspensions to eight players that will miss at least one game for the Hurricanes. Among those are returning starting quarterback Jacory Harris and Ray Ray Armstrong, one of the best safeties in the college football. This scandal has been hanging over Miami of late, and the suspensions of the players will no doubt weigh on the Hurricanes. Meanwhile, Maryland looks poised to make a mark on the ACC this year with first year head coach Randy Edsall.
Stepping in for Jacory Harris against the Terps for Miami will be sophomore Stephen Morris, who played in the final six games of the 2010 season. Morris went 2-4, ending the season with a 33-17 loss to Nore Dame. The bright side for the Hurricanes is that Morris has valuable gametime experience. Morris put up average numbers last season, completing 53.6% of his passes for 1,240 yards and 7 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. Along with losing Jacory Harris, the Hurricanes will be missing on of the premier safeties in the game, Ray Ray Armstrong. Armstrong provides a solid last line for their secondary, which is starting two new cornerbacks.
Maryland may be one of the surprise teams in the ACC this year. First year coach Randy Edsall from Connecticut is bringing a fresh look and feel to the Terps football program, coming off a BCS berth last season with the Huskies. Under center for the Terps will be sophomore Danny O'Brien, who had a monster freshman year, amassing 2,438 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. O'Brien is widely considered one of the top returning quarterbacks in the ACC. The Terps also return 7 starters on defense.
